I guess there is a lot of controversy right now about Elizabeth Gilbert's "spiritual quest for self" Eat Pray Love.
Some thinks she comes across as full of herself. Some think she's generalized and tried to find a quick fix for Eastern spirituality and thought. On the other hand, some love her. Women everywhere are setting out on their own pilgrimages for a search for meaning and a better life.
My jury is still out on this one. While I like to read about people who had enough "get-up-and-go" to stop complaining about their disillusionment and actually do something about it, I'm always hesitant about a "I found myself through a quest" kind of book. I think her voice is fresh and funny at times. I think she's genuine but also fake. I think she's telling about her experience but also preaching just a little. But hey, when I actually sit down to write a real book, maybe I'll do the same.
I have to give her credit for making her own personal quest into a highly-successful book that got her all the way to Oprah's couch.
Perhaps all the naysayers are really just jealous they didn't do it first...
