Sebold?
I just finished The Almost Moon, Sebold's new book and I have to say - yuck! I think I might be the hugest fan of Lovely Bones alive (aren't we all) so I was really psyched for her new one.
But I have to say - boring! I think she tried so hard to be shocking (first line - "When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily") that it ends up being not shocking if you will. Killing your mother is definitely cause for concern but after that astonishing admission, the book spirals into the no man's land of mental illness and a daughter who idolized/loved/hated/pined for her mother and her mother's affection. Just not original.
Sebold is, as always, a master at the skill of writing. Her sentences are constructed beautifully and she knows where to pack the punch. But the characters in Almost Moon are just flat and boring to the point that I actually didn't really care what happened to any of them which is never a good sign.
I guess I just needed to rant here because I was so disappointed. Anybody else read this book? Or better yet, read it and LOVED it? I'd like to talk to you!
